Partnerships aim to foster safe, decent and affordable housing opportunities

Rockford, IL – Rockford Housing Authority in collaboration with Gorman & Company and The Rockford Police Department District Two Neighborhood Response Unit received complaints and information during the past two weeks of narcotics being sold from a residence located within Brewington Oaks 515 Seminary Street, a Rockford Housing Authority property.

An investigation was initiated into the allegations. The findings of that investigation were presented the Winnebago County State’s Attorneys’ Office and a search warrant was obtained for the residence.

On 5/15/2014 at approximately 8:30 pm Members of the Rockford Police Department District Two Neighborhood Response Unit, with the assistance of Metro Enforcement Security, executed a search warrant at the residence.  A search of the residence yielded an amount of suspected Heroin and an arrest was made.

“As a result of weekly meetings to reduce and prevent crime, people are stepping forward with information about activity that makes their homes and communities unsafe,” said Ron Clewer, CEO Rockford Housing Authority. “Too often, because of the amount of time quality investigations take, residents feel nothing happens when such concerns are expressed. While I am troubled by this activity, I believe it sends a message to those who do make the effort to come forward. I am thankful to all who were involved in improving our developments.”

“It is unfortunate when RHA residents are at the center of criminal activity. The housing authority and Gorman have worked hard to attract good tenants. Last year arrests of RHA residents equaled 41 vs. 312 of non-residents. At 41 arrests, that is less than 1% of RHA’s client base.” Larry Hodges, Metro Enforcement.
