The Department of Housing and Urban Development just awarded $38 million dollars to programs across the country, and Rockford Housing Authority is pleased to be one of them. VASH, or Veteran Affairs Supportive Housing, awards have been especially helpful in Rockford, which has been the first city in the United States to effectively end veteran homelessness.

“Supporting the brave men and women who served our nation is not only our honor but also our responsibility,” said HUD Secretary Julián Castro. “Joining the more than 111,000 formerly homeless veterans who have already found homes through this successful program, thousands more brave veterans will be able to start a new chapter in their lives. It’s a privilege to partner with communities dedicated to ensuring that no veteran has to call the streets their home.”

RHA is proud to be one of the recipients of this VASH. HUD will award RHA 5 new vouchers, valued at $24,780 each, per year. This brings its total rental assistance to local veterans to 91 vouchers, and over $450,000 per year.

“I am thrilled to see the continued support for our regional efforts to end Chronic Veterans Homelessness. This effort was made a priority by our community last year when we became the first community to reach ‘functional zero.’ This additional support will help ensure our continued success in maintaining that accomplishment housing our Veterans,” said Rockford mayor, Larry Morrissey.

“Being the first city to effectively end Veteran’s homelessness, this additional investment shows HUD’s continued commitment in helping us address issues important to our community,” stated RHA CEO, Ron Clewer.

“We look forward to working with RHA and other local partners to assist more Veterans to achieve and maintain stability and self-sufficiency. We thank HUD for its continued support and confidence in our local efforts,” said George Davis, director of the Community Action Agency for Boone and Winnebago Counties, or CCAP.

Rockford Housing Authority’s continued commitment to affordable housing is made possible with awards like VASH awards, which will help to one day eliminate veteran homelessness in this country.
