Rockford Housing Authority launches ‘I Am Rockford’ music video

ROCKFORD — The Rockford Housing Authority unveiled a locally produced music video tonight that celebrates its message and its residents.

The video, “I Am Rockford,” debuted during RHA’s third-annual Community Celebration at Klehm Arboretum on South Main Street. It put a toe-tapping, hand-clapping spin on a poem about the I Am Rockford initiative. The poem was written by RHA staff member and former RHA resident Carandus Brown.

I Am Rockford, launched last year by the housing authority, recognizes hometown pride and individuality, and is intended to spark constructive dialogue on sensitive issues.

The video was filmed in various Rockford locations; many RHA residents and local singers and musicians participated. It is available on RHA’s Vimeo and Facebook pages.

RHA CEO Ron Clewer said it offers a positive message that debunks the “incredible misconception about the people” the Housing Authority serves.

“The intent is to get people to unite,” Clewer said. “We’re really one group of folks at the end of the day.”

Maurice West, a local musician, played piano for the song and helped with musical production. At tonight’s gathering, he played the keyboard to accompany the video. There were live vocal performances as well.

“It was phenomenal because some dreams came true,” West told the crowd. “Kids (with RHA) who had never been in a music video before were allowed to dance and play.”
