When Maria first enrolled in the Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) Program, she wasn’t sure what to expect. She knew she wanted more stability for herself and her family, but like many residents, she felt overwhelmed by where to begin. Between balancing work, household responsibilities, and financial stress, long-term planning often felt out of reach.
From the beginning, the FSS Program focused on listening and understanding Maria’s goals, challenges, and vision for the future. With guidance from Laura Martinez, FSS Program Specialist, Maria began breaking down what once felt impossible into manageable steps. Together, they created a personalized plan centered on employment growth, financial literacy, and long-term self-sufficiency.
As Maria progressed, she was introduced to Elias Soria, whose role emphasized accountability, encouragement, and steady progress. Through regular check-ins, he helped Maria stay focused on her goals, navigate setbacks, and recognize her achievements, even the small ones.
One of the most impactful aspects of the FSS Program was learning how effort could lead to long-term benefit. As Maria increased her earned income, she began building savings through the FSS escrow account—creating a tangible connection between her hard work and future stability.
Accessing support like FSS is now easier for HCV participants. When residents submit a Change of Information form, they can indicate interest in the FSS Program and receive follow-up information to help them explore the opportunity at their own pace.
The journey wasn’t without challenges, but with consistent support from the FSS team, Maria didn’t have to face them alone. Over time, her confidence grew. She felt more in control of her finances, clearer about her career path, and hopeful about what lay ahead.
