(Source: KFVS) SPRINGFIELD, IL (KFVS) – Zach Robinson, Digital Producer[/caption] Friday, July 22, 2016 U.S. Senator from Illinois Dick Durbin (D) announced Tuesday that 22 communities in Illinois will receive a total of $2,846,926 in grant funding. The funds were granted through the Resident Opportunities and Self Sufficiency (ROSS) Public Housing Family Self-Sufficiency (PH-FSS), a federal grant program administered by Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to develop strategies which help families learn skills, gain experience, and obtain employment in the hopes of leading to economic independence and housing self-sufficiency. “These programs will help families gain the skills necessary to land good-paying jobs and affordable housing,” Durbin said. “This federal funding will give local development agencies across the state the ability to help people in their communities who need it the most.” The Resident Opportunities and Self Sufficiency (ROSS) Public Housing Family Self-Sufficiency (PH-FSS) Program promotes the development of local strategies to coordinate the use of assistance under the public housing program with public and private resources, enable participating families to increase earned income and financial literacy, reduce or eliminate the need for welfare assistance, and make progress toward achieving economic independence and housing self-sufficiency. Rockford Housing Authority is pleased to receive $200,961 of grant funding. The most recent resident to participate in the FSS program at RHA is Tikisha Ellis. Her strong desire for home ownership prompted her to apply with Habitat for Humanity.  Tikisha was selected into the program, and her new house is currently under construction.  For more information, view her story: https://rockfordha.org/2016/07/18/i-am-self-sufficient/ Shauna Cain was the first RHA resident to complete the FSS program at RHA.  Her story is available here: https://rockfordha.org/2016/03/21/education-empowerment/ Contact Adrienne Head, ahead@rockfordha.org, 815-489-8750
