Black History Month – Booker Washington Community Center

The Booker Washington Community Center has served as a place where community members can participate in cultural and recreational programs.

It was founded in 1916 as a community center to serve black soldiers from Camp Grant during World War I. About 300 soldiers would stop weekly at 218 S. Main St.

Throughout the decades, the center has become a place that helped teens earn their GEDs, provided a nursery school for working mothers and served as a gathering spot for receptions. It moved to 524 Kent St. in 1936 and has undergone several renovations.
