Bridging Benefits Access at RHA

Residents Seeking Stability and Support

Across Rockford Housing Authority communities, residents are working hard to manage day-to-day responsibilities. Some are caring for children, others are aging adults focused on healthcare, and many are doing their best to keep up with rising costs. Programs like Medicaid, SNAP, and Social Security can help ease the burden, but understanding how to apply or recertify is often confusing. Many residents simply need someone who can walk through the process with them.

Complicated Systems Can Create Barriers

Public benefit programs can be difficult to navigate. Between strict deadlines, unclear forms, and documentation requirements, it’s easy for residents to feel overwhelmed. A missed signature or wrong form can result in delays or lost coverage. For individuals already under financial stress or caring for loved ones, this confusion becomes more than an inconvenience. It can affect housing, healthcare, and peace of mind.

Kala Hopp and Yolanda Anderson, A Resident-Focused Team

In April 2025, a new partnership began that brought Kala Hopp, Senior Benefits Service Partner (SBS), into Rockford Housing Authority to work alongside Yolanda Anderson, the Resident Support Specialist.

Clear Steps and Hands-On Guidance

Kala meets individually with residents to understand their needs and help them apply for the programs they are eligible for. Whether it’s walking through Medicaid paperwork, assisting with a food assistance application, or helping someone understand healthcare options, she takes the time to explain each step.

Confidence and Access

Since the partnership began, residents have shared positive feedback about the clarity and support they’ve received. Many now feel more confident applying for benefits and less intimidated by the paperwork. They also appreciate having someone who will sit with them, listen, and make sure nothing gets missed.

Every conversation and every form completed brings residents one step closer to the resources that help them move forward with stability and dignity.
