Hispanic Heritage month

From September 15th to October 15th is National Hispanic Heritage Month. This month traditionally honors the cultures and contributions of both the Hispanic and Latino Americans. We celebrate the heritage rooted in all Latin American countries and those from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central South America.

The observation started in June of 1968 as just a week-long celebration under President Lyndon Johnson. It was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a month-long period from September 15th to October 15th. It was proclaimed a law on August 17th, 1988. The Hispanic Heritage Month’s timing coincides with the Independence Day celebrations of several Latin American Nations- Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Also, Mexico and Chile celebrate their Independence Days on September 16th and 18th.

To help celebrate, even though social distancing guidelines are still in place, Rock Valley College is hosting a series of virtual events in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month. These events will be going on the whole month and will focus on community building by exploring social issues, cultural identities, and family-friendly activities. The virtual events include keynote speakers, showcasing Latinx cuisine from local restaurants, trivia games, and a family paint night!
