On May 2, Rockford Housing Authority transformed a local space into something much bigger than a job fair. It became a hub of possibility. Hosted by the Jobs Plus team, the event brought residents, job seekers, and more than a dozen local employers under one roof—not just to talk about jobs, but to make them happen.
When Connection Becomes Career
One of the most powerful parts of the day was the connection. Twenty-five employers—including Comfort Keepers, Serenity Healthcare, 160 Driving Academy , GRO Community, the U.S. Army, and Dickey Staffing—came prepared not just to recruit, but to engage. Representatives from organizations like Milestone, Hard Rock Casino, Rock Valley College’s WEI program. “Everyone I spoke to was kind and encouraging,” one attendee shared. “It felt like people were truly invested in us.” Several employers accepted applications immediately, with tables set up across the room for one-on-one support.
A Table, A Chair, A New Beginning
Near the entrance of the room, an “Application Station” quickly became one of the busiest spots. Residents filled out job applications right there—with some employers providing paper forms, others sharing tablets. Volunteers and staff stood by to assist with resumes and online portals. It wasn’t just an event—it was a place where things got done.
Support Beyond the Resume
The Jobs Plus team continues working behind the scenes to keep momentum going. Participants are receiving regular updates, including personalized rent savings letters through the Earned Income Disregard (EID) program—helping them track progress and build a path to self-sufficiency. In addition, financial wellness workshops on credit repair and budgeting are giving residents the long-term tools they need to thrive.
The May 2 Job Fair was a reflection of what’s possible when community meets opportunity. Residents felt heard. Employers found talent. And lives were changed in real time.
