Rockford Housing Authority announces the 2018 “What Home Means to Me” poster contest

We all know that everyone defines the word “Home” differently, and our youth are no exception, often bringing an even more compelling and sincere meaning than some adults.

Many of today’s youth love to share their thoughts through creative expression in a variety of mediums – whether it be music, writing, or traditional visual art. While it is not our main mission to provide such opportunity, it absolutely is a perk when we give the youth residing in our communities an outlet to showcase their artistic skills and creatively exhibit their unique and individual definitions of “Home”.

In that spirit, The National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO), as a part of their Housing America Campaign are holding a nationwide poster contest for youth living in affordable housing. More than simply a contest, this is an opportunity for families in our communities to come together and expound upon the meaning of “Home” while having the opportunity to express their unique stories.

This year “What Home Means to Me” poster contest will take place Saturday, February 4, 2017 2-5 pm at the Blackhawk Community Center, 330 15th Ave, Rockford, IL 61104.

The regional council will select three winners – one from each age category – and forward those on to the national competition in Washington, D.C.

The 12 national winners will each receive a $100 Visa gift card. The national grand prize winner will be awarded an iPad. The grand prize winner and one member of his or her family will also be provided with transportation to and from and lodging at NAHRO’s Washington Conference in Washington, D.C. where he or she will be honored. The grand prize winner will also receive a framed copy of their original artwork and will tour Capitol Hill.

National honorees will be selected by a Blue Ribbon panel of judges to be assembled by National NAHRO staff. National honorees will be officially announced during Housing America Month in October.

The contest covers these Age Categories: Elementary – K to 5th grade; Middle – 6th to 8th grade; High – 9th to 12th grade. In Rockford, the winner in each age group will also serve as a cover to RHA resident document packets.

Winners will be featured in the annual Housing America “What Home Means to Me” calendar and will receive a $100 Visa Gift Card. Proceeds from the calendar sales go to a fund for the winners of the poster calendar contest.  All eight NAHRO regions will be represented in the calendar.
