Rockford, IL — October 22, 2024 — In the aftermath of a recent fire that caused extensive damage to our property, Rockford Housing Authority wishes to express profound gratitude to our dedicated staff, emergency responders, and the supportive community who have demonstrated exceptional commitment during this challenging time.

The fire resulted in significant damage to the first floor and heavy smoke damage to the second through fourth floors. While the cause remains under investigation by the fire marshal and general contractors—our top priority is to ensure the safety and security of our residents.

“Our team has been working around the clock to support our residents,” said Laura Synder, CEO of Rockford Housing Authority “We are incredibly proud of the swift action and dedication shown by our staff and the overwhelming support from the community.”

Key Updates:

  • Resident Relocation: Out of 170 residents, 144 have been rehoused in seven local hotels, thanks to the generous support of community partners.
  • Emergency Response: The Rockford Area Emergency Response team, led by Division Chief of Operations, Fire Chief O’Keefe, has been instrumental in managing the situation. Chief O’Keefe remarked, “We feel like we’re not needed. I’ve never worked with a team that has jumped into action like this.”
  • Staff Dedication: Our staff members have demonstrated extraordinary commitment, with team members staying at the hotels to serve as liaisons to residents, ensuring their needs are promptly addressed.
  • Community Support: Life Scape has been providing lunch and dinner at a reduced rate until Wednesday. Those wishing to assist can do so through Bridge Rockford (Call: 815-489-8533 and leave a message of interest). Additionally, the Salvation Army and RHA have each provided $50 gift cards to 130 residents, while RHA covered the full $100 for an additional 14 residents, allowing them to purchase essential items at the local Walmart.
  • Property Restoration: Restoration efforts are underway, and we are working closely with contractors to expedite the process.
  • Rescue Efforts: We are pleased to report that a cat was rescued from the building on Monday, bringing comfort to its owner and the community.

“We cannot thank our staff and the community enough for their unwavering support and hard work,” added Laura Synder. “Our commitment remains steadfast in restoring normalcy and ensuring the safety of all our residents.”
