Rockford Housing Authority’s Commitment to Sustainability

Rockford Housing Authority (RHA) is honored to be featured by the U.S. Department of Energy for its commitment to sustainability.

RHA received approval in 2014 for an implementation project under a 15-year term to reduce utility consumption, address capital improvements, increase unit comfort, and improve overall resident quality of life. The project was completed in eight of RHA’s buildings in December of 2015.

Despite limited capital funding, the Rockford Housing Authority has successfully created a culture of energy efficiency through its strategic resident programming as well as its engagement in an Energy Performance Contract (EPC). Not only has RHA experienced reduced energy costs but the quality of housing has improved and residents are better equipped to practice energy efficiency.

The efficiency upgrades fit into RHA’s goal of transforming its housing stock from housing of last choice into desirable communities. To add, by improving tenants’ quality of life and providing stable housing, RHA’s investments have had a beneficial impact on the surrounding neighborhoods.
