The Summer Food Service Program 2019

The Summer Food Service Program 2019

With the beginning of summer arriving, many students will be ready to enjoy their fun filled break from school. However, for many families in our community, when school is out their kids will no longer have access to the free or reduced-price meals school provided through the School Breakfast Program and National School Lunch Program.

The Summer Food Service Program returns this summer to provide children and teens in low-income areas with free and nutritious meals while school is out. SFSP locations are hosted and supervised by local public and private organizations including schools, community centers, and faith-based organizations. The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) and administered by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE).

Sponsors, chosen by the ISBE, pick a food service to supply the meals, fill out reimbursement forms, pay for the food, and choose the sites where the meals will be served. These sites are strategically located to help serve the greatest number of children. The sites, in addition to providing the food for kids, offer activities and games. The sites report to sponsors how many kids visit every day and how many meals were served.

Children 18 years and younger may receive free meals and snacks through the SFSP. There are open sites and closed sites for free meals. Open sites are meal sites where anyone age 18 and under can get a free meal. There is no fee, no sign-up, and no proof of identity or legal status required. Closed sites are meal sites that require sign-up and sometimes require a small fee to participate throughout the summer. These can include summer camps or other programming that you must register for ahead of time. At most sites, children receive either one or two reimbursable meals each day. Certain camps and sites may be approved to serve up to three meals to each child, each day.
