Understanding the Preference Points System

In Series 4 of our Affordable Housing Series, we’re exploring the preference points system. This system is crucial in determining your placement on the waitlist and understanding it can help you better navigate the process.

What Are Preference Points?

Think of preference points to prioritize applicants based on specific criteria. Points are awarded for factors such as:

  • Local residency
  • Veteran status
  • Disability status
  • Being a single parent or part of a working household.

Each point moves you closer to the top of the waitlist, increasing your chances of being selected for housing.

How Are Points Calculated?

The RHA system calculates points automatically based on the information you provide during your application. That’s why accuracy is essential when completing your application.

Impact on Waitlist Placement

Preference points play a significant role in determining your position. While the date and time of application matter, preference points can shift your placement up or down as new applications are processed.

Stay tuned for Series 5, where we’ll compare the Public Housing waitlist with the Section 8 program and explain their differences.
