In a letter from the Alliance for Strong Communities, Sheila Otto provides information on RHA’s receiving the 2016 Commitments Award for Engaging All Voices.
“Thank you, once again, for your participation in this project focusing on organizational approaches to engagement practices! Our hope is that by providing examples for our network of what engagement philosophies look like in action, we can foster more discussion, consideration, and adoption of the benefits and increased impact through these approaches.
I appreciate your willingness to help others learn and for standing up for what is right and just. Strong leaders like you are what our sector needs right now, more so than ever!” Sheila Otto
“The Rockford Housing Authority (RHA), through restructuring and reorientation including the creation of its nonprofit subsidiary Bridge Rockford Alliance, has set out to provide more than just housing. It operates with the belief that housing as a pathway to increased stability, well-being, and community engagement.
From the very beginning, however, it has had to contend with systems that are unaccustomed to its philosophy on housing. When “not in my backyard” protests erupted from residents, its approach was put to the test. True to its authentic engagement orientation, RHA has stood up to these fears and advocated for its public housing residents and worked with neighbors to co-create solutions, ” stated Susan Dreyfuss, President, the Alliance for Strong Communities.
