ROCKFORD (WIFR 23 News) Father’s Day may be on Sunday, but several groups honor Stateline dads a day early. The Rockford Housing Authority hosted a 500 Fathers Festival on Saturday at Fairgrounds Park. The event focused on the best way for dads to build relationships with their kids. According to the Department of Housing and Urban Development, kids raised without a father are more at-risk for dropping out of school and living a life of crime. “Fathers are a staple in the community, all of our children look up to a good responsible man as a father so it’s time to celebrate them and we’re here to make a festival out of fathers because i believe that all men deserve that,” says Brandon Russell, one of the event coordinators. This is the fourth year for the event. The Rockford Park District, New Zion Baptist Church, The Jesus Walks Tour and the Boys and Girls Club took part in the day’s festivities.
