Changes in HUD inspections timing

HUD TO DRASTICALLY CUT NOTICE FOR INSPECTIONS OF PUBLIC HOUSING AND PRIVATELY 

OWNED APARTMENT BUILDINGS

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is launching a series of listening sessions around the nation to gather input from the public and HUD stakeholders about a planned pilot program to test innovative new approaches to inspecting HUD-assisted properties.

THE NEW INSPECTION MODEL IS PRESENTED IN ATLANTA

The Rockford Housing Authority’s Leadership Team represented by Laura Snyder, CEO and Owen Carter, Director of Housing Operations who are in Atlanta with other Public Housing Authority leaders at the conference, for the new inspection model are there to hear, understand and provide feedback to HUD staff. The listening session is designed to gather input from HUD stakeholders about the planned pilot program. Among the presenters were Donald Lavoy, Deputy Assistant Secretary, REAC and Denise Cleveland-Leggett, HUD Administrator of the Regional Office.

HUD currently helps 4.7 million families to access affordable, quality housing. HUD also supports these households through several rental assistance programs, primarily relying upon private owners to house these households. This new advance notice model will enable researchers, advocacy groups and the general public to 1) better understand the physical condition of the HUD-assisted housing stock, as well as changes in the stock over time; 2) hold providers accountable for housing quality; and 3) plan for future affordable housing needs.

ABOUT 14-DAY ADVANCE NOTICE

The 14-day advance notice is designed to encourage year-round maintenance of properties to ensure it is decent, safe and healthy. This is dramatically reducing the advance notice HUD provides to public housing authorities (PHAs) and private owners of HUD-subsidized apartment developments. This will continue to ensure that these homes are decent, safe and healthy. This new standard provides the Rockford Housing Authority and private owners in the community a dramatic reduction from the current notice which can frequently extend up to four months.
