The International Day of Peace (“Peace Day”) is observed around the world each year on September 21st. Established in 1981 by unanimous United Nations resolution, Peace Day provides a globally shared date for all humanity to commit to Peace above all differences and to contribute to building a Culture of Peace.
“This year’s theme is Actions for Peace: Our Ambition for the #GlobalGoals. It is a call to action that recognizes our individual and collective responsibility to foster peace. Fostering peace contributes to the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals will create a culture of peace for all.” – United Nations, they further state; United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, “Peace is needed today more than ever. War and conflict are unleashing devastation, poverty, and hunger, and driving tens of millions of people from their homes. Climate chaos is all around. And even peaceful countries are gripped by gaping inequalities and political polarization.”
Significance of Peace Day
The International Day of Peace aims to remind of the UN’s commitment to peace and conflict resolution and encourages individuals, communities and nations to work toward a more peaceful and just world. It continues to be an important day for promoting understanding and cooperation among people. Peace day also aims to build a world where everyone is treated equally regardless of their race and the day provides a “globally shared date for all humanity to commit to peace above all differences and to contribute to building a culture of peace.”
It is more important than ever today to promote peace and open-mindedness for acceptance across gender, race, and territories. Individuals and organizations around the world participate in activities and host events centered on the set theme for the year. Activities vary from private events to public ceremonies, festivals, and concerts sending the message of peace to large audiences.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights & the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Genocide
2023 is also the 75th anniversaries of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Genocide.” IDP 2023 encourages all youth to be ambitious in their engagement as positive and constructive social agents, to join the movement to reach the SDGs and contribute to building sustainable peace. Together we can help to lead our world toward a greener, more equitable, just, and secure future for all.”
To continue to create strategic partnerships with community stakeholders, design a diverse housing portfolio, leverage social service programming to unite and ensure residents are provided with safe and nurturing environments that lead to self-sufficiency, responsibility, and individual empowerment.
