What is Voting & How to Register

According to Webster’s Dictionary, voting means a “formal expression of opinion or choice made by an individual.” Therefore, this is a way to express your choice in any matter. In this case, you would be casting a vote in the election.

To vote in the state of Illinois, you have to be registered to vote. If you don’t know if you are registered, follow the link to check!

To register in the State of Illinois, you must:

  • Be a citizen of the United States.
  • Be a resident of Illinois and your election precinct 30 days before the next election.
  • Be at least 18 years old on or before the next election.
  • Not serving a sentence of confinement for a criminal conviction (but you can vote if you have been charged but not convicted, have completed your sentence, or have been released on parole.
  • Not claim the right to vote anywhere else.

To vote in the upcoming election, you must be registered by:

  • In Person: Received 28 days before Election Day (If voters miss this deadline, they may also register during the registration grace period.)
    • Office of the election authority
    • Driver’s license facilities
    • With deputy registrars who are appointed in each jurisdiction. 
  • By Mail: Postmarked 28 days before Election Day.
  • Online: Received 16 days before Election Day. (If voters miss this deadline, they may also register during the registration grace period.)
