Historic Harriet Tubman Commemorative Coins Unveiled by U.S. Mint in January 2024

A Tribute to Freedom’s Heroine Through Gold, Silver, and Clad Half-Dollar Designs

In a monumental celebration of the 2022 Bicentennial of Harriet Tubman’s birth, the United States Mint has released a series of commemorative coins that pay homage to the enduring legacy of one of history’s greatest heroes in the fight for freedom. These groundbreaking coins, available in gold, silver, and clad half-dollar denominations, aim to capture the different chapters of Tubman’s remarkable life.

Symbolic Designs Reflecting Tubman’s Heroic Journey

The clad half-dollar coin, representing Tubman’s service as a military leader during the Civil War, showcases her pivotal role in the Combahee River Raid that liberated over 700 enslaved individuals. The $1 silver coin commemorates Tubman’s iconic role as a conductor on the Underground Railroad, guiding more than 70 enslaved people to freedom, with 19 trips, including one especially challenging journey in which she rescued her 70-year-old parents. The $5 gold coin symbolizes Tubman’s humanitarian efforts during the final five decades of her life.

A Mission Beyond Currency: Supporting Freedom Centers

A portion of the proceeds from the sale of these commemorative coins will contribute to the mission of the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center and the Harriet Tubman Home in Auburn, NY. This philanthropic initiative aims to preserve and promote the history of the Underground Railroad while honoring the life and contributions of Harriet Tubman.

The Catalyst for Freedom: Tubman’s Escape and Activism

Harriet Tubman’s journey to freedom was sparked by her owner’s death and the uncertainty that followed. Faced with the prospect of being sold to a new owner, Tubman, along with her brothers, made a daring escape. Tubman’s solo journey to freedom, facilitated by the Underground Railroad, marked the beginning of her tireless activism for the liberation of others.

A Champion for Women’s Suffrage

Beyond her role in the fight against slavery, Tubman was an avid supporter of women’s suffrage. Her experiences as an enslaved woman and liberator fueled her passion for the Women’s Rights Movement, aligning her with early leaders who championed the cause.
